Easy Crochet Hat.

Are you looking for an easy crochet project for beginners? Yes, great, me too. I think these crocheted hats might be exactly what we've been looking for.

There are no complicated stitches or patterns, you don’t need to be able to crochet in the round or increase or decrease stitches. All you need to do is crochet a simple rectangle.

I've always wanted to learn how to crochet. Before making these hats I'd only ever crocheted two things, a giant granny square baby blanket and a cowl that wasn't totally successful. The problem with only making these two things is that I only knew how to make these two things! I had no idea how to read a pattern or even what treble crochet actually was so when I found what looked like a really easy and free pattern over on Lion Yarns website I was thrilled.

How to crochet a hat.

If you’re a beginner to crochet like I am, a hat can seem like a really complicated project but I promise this one is really easy to make.

A lot of crocheted hats are made by crocheting in the round with decreases along the way. The great thing about this hat is all you need to know is how to make a flat rectangle that you can whip stitch together.

I made two different versions. A slouchy beanie you can wear with the brim folded up or down and a chunky ribbed version with a giant pompom on top. Here’s how to make them.

Single Crochet Hat For Beginners.

Supplies:

(Each hat used just under one 100g ball of wool).

Chain of crocheted blue yarn on crochet hook.

Step by step instructions for the beginner.

1. Start by making the initial chain. This will be the height of your hat.

I used a 6.5 mm crochet hook and chained 40 as I wanted my hat to be slouchy.

Two rows of single crochet on crochet hook.

2. Single crochet into the 2nd chain from the hook and then into each chain.

Four rows of single crochet attached to crochet hook.

3. Chain 1, turn and then single crochet into each stitch.

4. Repeat crocheting rows until you're happy with the length.

I crocheted 60 rows which measured around 45 cm. The number of rows you crochet will be the circumference of your hat.

Top tip:

I found the best way to measure this was to tie some wool around my head and then use this as a guide.

Remember your crochet will have some give in it so make sure to take this into consideration.

5. Fasten off the end of your wool. You should now have a rectangle made up of rows of single crochet.

Mine measured 32 cm by 45 cm.

6. To make your hat you need to make a simple tube and gather it at the top.

To do this you need to thread some yarn onto a tapestry needle and do a running stitch (sew in and out through the stitches) along one of the long ends of your crochet rectangle.

7. Pull the wool to gather the top.

8. Pull it tight and knot to close.

If you still have a hole at the top of your hat don’t panic, you can sew this closed at the end.

9. Next thread some wool onto a needle and whip stitch the side edges together to make a tube.

10. To finish weave in the ends.

11. If you need to sew the top of the hat closed.

Top tip:

For the second hat, I left a long tail yarn at the end and instead of stitching the side together first, I gathered the top instead.

To do this thread the tail yarn through the ends of the rows of the long edge and then pull to gather the top. Sew the sides together with some more yarn and then sew the sides together before weaving in the ends.

Crochet Hat Pattern:

Chain 40.

Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across - 39 stitches.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, single crochet in each stitch across. Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures about 45 cm from the beginning. Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through ends of rows along one long edge and pull to gather for the top of Hat. Knot securely.

Finishing: Sew sides together for the back seam of the Hat. Weave in ends.

Ribbed Crochet Hat.

For my second hat, I made a ribbed effect. The pattern is exactly the same as the first hat except I crocheted into the back loop of each stitch instead.

For the first row, you crochet in exactly the same way but when it comes to all the other rows you crochet into the back loops only. It's the front loops sticking out that give it that ribbed effect.

Close up ribbed crochet.

Here's close-up of the ribbed crochet.

To finish the ribbed hat I made a giant pompom using some leftover wool and this set of pompom makers and attached it to the top.

Let me know if you decide to give crochet a go or make one of these hats. I'd love to know how you get on. They're really easy, I promise.
