OUT AND ABOUT: SUSSEX.

Worthing Pier, Sussex

I'm back from a weeks holiday in Sussex. The photo above is from Worthing Pier. I'm in love that bright red 'pier' sign.

We went shopping in Brighton, cycling along the coast, ate a lot of food, watched San Andreas (both the best and the worst film I've ever seen and I loved it) at the refurbished Edwardian Dome Cinema, spent some time in Alfriston (I can recommend Much Ado Books, the best book shop!), Lewes and Arundel.

Here's some photos from the trip.

Arundel Castle, Sussex

Arundel Castle was a highlight. It's a restored medieval castle and the gardens are amazing. They were filled with these gorgeous carved wooden structures and so many plants and trees. It all felt very Game of Thrones.

That building you can see in the second picture down on the right was Oberon's Palace. The walls inside were covered in shells and housed a stalagmite fountain with a golden crown that floated on top and was really hard to take photos of. I've included the dodgy mobile phone photo anyway because even though it's grainy the fountain was pretty amazing and I think it deserves to be shared. It's well worth a visit if you're ever in the area.

If you're interested you can learn more about the castle and it's history here and the gardens here.

What's everyone else been up to?

CROXTETH HALL AND PETIT FOURS.

Croxteth Hall and Petit Fours

On Sunday I spent a lovely, sunny afternoon at Croxteth Hall. It was open to the public for free as part of the Heritage weekend celebrations and was packed full of art, food and craft stalls.

Sadly I forgot to take my camera but I did manage to take a few snaps of these amazing petit fours I'd carefully transported home before we ate them. Delicious.

OUT AND ABOUT: HALE VILLAGE.

Out and About: Hale Village - Statue of John Middleton

We took a trip to the village of Hale the other day. Hale is most famous for being the birthplace and home of John Middleton, best known as 'The Childe of Hale' who lived over 300 hundred years ago and was 9 feet 3 inches tall..

It was a beautiful, sunny day. We walked along the coast, watched quite a few planes take off and land (Liverpool airport is just down the road) and snapped a few pictures. The village was full of gorgeous whitewashed thatched cottages but sadly I'd forgotten to check my camera batteries (oops) and they ran out way before we got to that part of the village.

The statue above replaced a supposedly life size wood carving in 2013. There's a fantastic legend about how The Childe of Hale became so tall which you can read about here or if you're interested and fancy visit yourself you can find more out about the the village here.

It's definitely a place we'll be going back to, next time I just need to remember to check my batteries!

OUT AND ABOUT - LADY LEVER ART GALLERY.

Out and About - Lady Lever Art Gallery - Edward Burne-Jones Exhibition - Gathering Beauty

Last weekend my phone and I took a little trip to the Lady Lever Art Gallery to see the Edward Burne-Jones Exhibition. The weather wasn't great but I still managed to take a few photos. Even in the rain it was worth a visit.

The exhibition consisted of 25 drawings and watercolours. Some were preparatory studies for larger pieces and others were works of art in their own right. A lot of my favourite pieces were the preparatory studies. It's fascinating to be able to see the foundations of a larger piece, a bit like going behind the scenes of a film.

If you've never been to the Lady Lever Art Gallery I'd recommend watching this video. Actually, even if you have been you should still watch it. It's always interesting to see a familiar place through someone else's eyes. It's amazing how differently we can all view the same space.

OUT AND ABOUT - STRAWBERRY PICKING.

Out and About - Strawberry Picking - Gathering Beauty

This weekend we decided to take full advantage of the lovely, sunny weather we're still having here in England and go strawberry picking. Strawberries really are the perfect summer treat. They were as delicious as they look. In fact it was hard not to eat them all as we walked back to the car. Thankfully quite a few survived and I can't wait to make something with them. I'm thinking a strawberry milkshake might be on the cards.
