DIY Shaker Bookmarks.

Calling all book lovers! You’re going to love today’s craft project. If you've been looking for a fun bookmark DIY then this is the one for you. These shaker bookmarks are super easy to create and make an adorable handmade gift.

Scrapbook Paper Bookmarks.

Even though I don't scrapbook I’m a sucker for all the pretty paper and use them in a lot of my papercraft. I’ve collected (hoarded 😉) a lot of craft supplies over the years and I’m determined to actually use them instead of saving them in a drawer.

If like me, you like to save all your paper scraps, you’re in luck. These shaker style bookmarks are the perfect way to use up any leftovers you might have lying around.

DIY Bookmarks.

The inspiration for this project came from all those lovely shaker pockets people make when they scrapbook with page protectors. Have you seen them? You use a Fuse tool to weld the plastic together and create a pocket you can fill with embellishments like buttons, and die-cut shapes.

Instead of making scrapbook page pockets, I thought it would be fun to make some sequin filled pocket bookmarks. I love the idea of adding some extra sparkle to a book.

I’m so happy with how they turned out and can’t wait for you to make them as well!

Supplies:

I used the Amy Tangerine Stitched range from American Crafts that is sadly no longer available but her new Brave and Bold Collection is lovely as well.

Heavyweight page protectors work best as they make a sturdier bookmark.

How To Make Shaker Bookmarks.

1. First trim your scrapbook paper and page protector to size. I made mine 2.5 x 7 inches.

The better the quality of page protector you use the better your bookmark will be. I tried making them using the kind you'd put in a ring binder but they were too flimsy. The thicker the plastic the sturdier the bookmark.

2. Place a page protector on top of a scrapbook paper and line them up.

3. Use a sewing machine to sew three of the sides together.

You need to leave a gap at the top of your bookmark to make the pocket. Don't worry about the loose threads, we'll be tidying them up later.

4. Fill your pocket bookmark with sequins, confetti, glitter or other embellishments.

5. Sew the top of your bookmark closed.

6. Flip your bookmark over. To tidy up the loose ends pull the loose thread at the back, the front thread should pull through to the back where you can tie it together in a knot.

You can see a close-up of how to do this over on this post for Easy DIY Notebooks.

7. To finish embellish the outside with stickers if you’re feeling extra crafty.

What do you think? I had so much fun creating these and already have plans to make more. They’d make cute gift tags, right?
