9 OF THE BEST DIY CROCHET HATS - FOR BEGINNERS #CROCHET #HAT #FREEPATTERN #CROCHETPATTERN

Is it getting chilly where you are yet? We’ve had a reasonably mild winter so far but the last few days there’s definitely been a chill in the air. I love the colder weather, any excuse to be able to wrap up warm and make a new hat or scarf.

I know if you’re a beginner a crochet hat can seem like a complicated first project to attempt but I promise you they’re the easiest thing to make. A lot of crochet hat patterns involve crocheting in the round as well as increasing and decreasing which can seem quite scary. I’m pleased to tell you that you don’t need to worry about any of that with these patterns.

All nine of these tutorials show you how to make a simple crochet hat from a rectangle. They all use basic beginner stitches such as single crochet or half double crochet and are easy to work up. All you need to do is crochet a simple rectangle, seam the edges of your rectangle together to make a tube, gather the top together and whip stitch it closed.

I’ve included my own easy peasy crochet hats in the round-up (they’re the turquoise ones in the middle). They’re the first thing I learnt to make when I started to crocheting again. So I know what a good project they make for beginners and can recommend them

Crochet Brooklyn Ridge Hat

All I had with me was the beginning of a chunky scarf WIP (work in progress) stuffed in my bag and a pair of near-frostbitten ears. I knew I needed an easy crochet hat and fast! I hoped my scarf was the right size to sew up and pop on my head, but let’s be honest – even if it wasn’t, it was better than nothing.

Classic Bubblegum Pompom Hat Crochet Pattern

So the other day while watching my little sister chew away, I thought to myself  “Why not create a hat inspired by our childhood memories of bubblegum and the fun that comes with it?”.

Half Double Crochet Hat

This is lesson four in my Crochet Basics series and we’re making a hat! I promise it’s EASY and so fun. If you can crochet a rectangle, you can make this hat. I’m also teaching you how to half double crochet, which is almost exactly like double crochet, with one small change.

How To Crochet Crochet Hat

Whether you're new to learning how to crochet a hat or just looking for a super fast project, this free crochet hat pattern for beginners is astonishingly easy. If you can crochet a rectangle, you can make this simple unisex beanie pattern!

Lolly-Poms Easy Ribbed Crochet Beanie

I had been toying with the idea of a knit-look, but after thinking about it, I decided it was the ribbed look I was really going after. After creating the ribbing on my last hat, I figured why not make an entire hat using the same technique? And even better, why not make it as a slab instead of worrying about sizes and decreases.

Favorite Style’n Beanie

This is made in the round, but there’s no counting rounds. You start with a chain, slip stitch it together and crochet away until the piece is about 9 - 10 inches tall. It is all done in the moss or granite stitch, which is a great beginner stitch.

Extended Half Double Crochet Winter Hat

These hats use the same technique of making a rectangle, then folding it in half and stitching the sides together, then gathering one end together at the top and adding a pom pom.

Rosewood Beanie

This beanie is extremely simple to crochet as all you need to do is crochet a rectangle by single crocheting in the front loops only in turned rows. I blocked my rectangle when I was finished crocheting it by pinning it onto foam mats and blasting it with hot steam from my trusty steamer.

Free Crochet Winter Hat Pattern – Herringbone Stitch Beanie

This free crochet winter hat pattern uses a herringbone crochet moss stitch and a simple bottom up method from the band to create a stunning, textured beanie in sizes for the whole family.

Bobble Beanie Crochet Pattern

I love crocheting bobbles. I think the texture given to hats, blankets, and just about anything else is fun and adds great visual interest. This hat works differently than most that I’ve made. You’re going to create a rectangular piece of “fabric” first. Then, you’ll add a virtually invisible seam and add a brim. The top will be cinched before adding a faux fur pompom. Sound complicated? I assure you it isn’t.

Free Crochet Beanie Pattern, The Cozy Pom Pom Beanie

Before this week, it had been a long time since I had written any crochet hat patterns. You’d think that I’d be whipping out crochet beanies all the time since they’re so quick to make. Early in my designing days, I wrote a lot of free crochet hat patterns. But, I had the idea for this beginner-friendly crochet pattern and I had to write up the pattern. In the process, I think I made at least four of these hats.

Uri Beanie Free Crochet Hat Pattern

I wanted to make a hat with a THICK crochet fabric that would be nice and warm. You know, to keep all of that heat from escaping out of the top of my head :) What we have is a whole bunch of front post half double crochet stitches that work up on top of one another to make a really nice, thick and warm crochet beanie. This fabric, however, does crochet up tightly because it is so dense.

Bottom Up Fitted Crochet Hat Pattern

This bottom up fitted crochet hat features a stretchy brim and fitted crown. Using worsted weight yarn and double crochet stitches, it’s a great basic crochet beanie!

How to Crochet in the Round and Make a Beanie

And it’s easier than it looks. We aren’t learning any new stitches with this technique, only how to “increase.” To get the circular shape we need, we need to add stitches with each round (circular row) and we do this by working two stitches in the same space.

Alpaca Squishy Pom Beanie Crochet Hat Pattern

I’m on a total kick with this alpaca blend yarn because it’s so soft and also quite affordable. It’s true that I may have bought half of my local JoAnn’s stock  to make my latest projects. Lol! Anyway, this hat turned out to be so squishy and super cute!

Star Sand Free Crochet Hat Pattern

This decadently textured crochet beanie pattern uses the camel stitch and the star stitch together to make stripes of gorgeous, airy texture. This may be one of my all time favourite crochet hat patterns! I loved it so much that I made a matching textured crochet cowl pattern to go with it!

Puff Dot Crochet Beanie

I call this one the puff dot crochet beanie, because it uses the puff or bobble stitch in a staggered dot pattern. I’ve set them in between taller double crochet stitches rather than tighter sc or hdc so that they are less pronounced and the end result is smoother.

The Summit Beanie

The Summit Beanie uses 1 ball of the new Fifty Fifty Yarn from the LB Collection, which is 50% alpaca and 50% wool. It is classified as a super bulky level 6 yarn although I would say it is closer to a jumbo level 7 yarn. 9 different colours are available, and it is very soft due to the alpaca in it! How beautiful are these blush and cream colours?

Double Brim Ribbed Crochet Beanie

Last winter, I designed a luxurious Snow Puff Ribbed Beanie & Scarf by holding two strands of New Basic 175 (worsted weight level 4) yarn together to create a gorgeous marled look. I love working half double crochets in the third loop to achieve different effects, and this beanie has such a modern look with its ribbing and double brim.
