Oreo Spider Cupcakes.

Aren’t these spider cupcakes adorable? (I’ve also got some Witches Hat Cupcakes you might like). I love making special treats for Halloween and these Oreo spider cupcakes do not disappoint.

They’re incredibly easy to make and super cute to boot. All you need are a few simple ingredients to turn a frosted cupcake into a not-so-spooky spider cookie cupcake.

And do you know what makes them even better? Not only can you use them on top of cupcakes you could use them on brownies, and cookies and even have a whole bunch of them decorating a large cake or pie.

All you need to do is top each cupcake with a buttercream swirl, add an Oreo, pipe on the legs and pop on a couple of eyes. Totally kid-friendly so even if you’ve never decorated a cupcake you’ll be able to make these.

Easy Halloween Spider Cupcakes.

You might have seen a version of these Oreo spiders before. I’ve seen them made with liquorice, pocky sticks, Smarties for eyes and even pretzels but I think the green sponge and icing legs on these ones really give it a different look.

Change them up depending on your skill level or the amount of time you have available. You can make them from scratch using your favourite cupcake recipe, use a boxed cake mix like in this recipe or even store-bought cupcakes if you’re really short on time.

Use homemade frosting or ready-made. Not sure about using a piping bag? Buy some of these handy black icing tubes for the legs.

Make them your own by using different cake colouring gels. I mean, how good would purple or orange cakes look peeping out beneath the spiders? Use regular Oreos, double-stuffed or even Halloween Oreos for some extra colour.

How to make Halloween Spider Cupcakes.

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

  • Add your cupcake ingredients and mix in a large bowl. Add a drop of gel food colouring to your batter.

  • Divide the mixture between 24 cupcake liners.

  • Bake for 15-18 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

  • Allow to cool completely. I recommend letting them cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing them and letting them finish cooling on a wire rack.

  • While the cupcakes are cooling make your buttercream frosting. I recommend making 2-3 cups.

  • Fit a piping bag or ziplock back with a !M or 2D tip. Add your buttercream and pipe a circle around the top of the cupcake.

Note: If you’re unsure about using a piping bag you can spread the frosting onto the cupcake instead. A piped circle does give a prettier finish though.

  • Place an Oreo in the centre of the cupcake on top of the buttercream.

adding black icing legs to cupcakes
  • Pipe on the legs with black decorators icing (this one comes with two different decorating tips). If you don’t feel confident piping on the legs you might find a black gel icing in a tube easier.

  • Add a small amount of icing or edible glue to the back of each candy eye and stick to the top of the Oreo cookie.
