Shirley Temple Recipe.

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and if you’re looking for the perfect red-themed drink to serve to the kids, Mum’s to be or anyone else that wants a delicious and refreshing non-alcoholic cocktail then I have just the recipe for you.

One of my favourite things to do on Valentine’s Day is to serve heart-shaped crumpets for breakfast or a pink lemonade punch with lunch. It’s not just my little boy that’s a sucker for Valentine’s themed food. I’ve got to admit I’ve got a soft spot for them too.

This year we’ve made some origami hearts to hang as a garland and a Connie the Caterpillar to share. I think a classic Shirley Temple drink will be just the thing to go with it.

With only four ingredients needed (including the ice), it’s super simple and quick to whip up. Traditionally made with ginger ale this version uses Sprite instead. For added flavour, you could replace some of the fizzy pop with orange juice or swap out the lime slice for lemon.

So basically, if you're looking for an easy and delicious non-alcoholic drink to make at home, why not give an old Shirley Temple a try.

What is a Shirley Temple?

The Shirley Temple has got to be the most famous mocktail there is. It’s ideal for a hot summers day when you want something refreshing without it being too sweet or heavy. I love to serve them at barbecues or birthday parties when the kids want to be fancy like the grown-ups.

It’s typically a non-alcoholic drink created for and named after the famous child actress Shirley Temple. Although ironically she later said she didn’t even like the drink and found it too sweet!

What is in a Shirley Temple?

The ingredients in a classic Shirley Temple are:

As time went by people started to make it with lemon and lime soda (Sprite) or a combination of ginger ale and Sprite. It can even be made using orange juice although that’s not as common anymore.

Most Shirley Temple drinks are served with a garnish of maraschino cherries and a slice of lime. If you really want to push the boat out, you could even top it with a scoop of ice cream for a fancy ice cream float.

What is Grenadine?

Grenadine is a non-alcoholic fruit syrup used to sweeten and colour mixed drinks. Originally made using pomegranate juice and sugar most store-bought grenadine syrups are usually made from high-fructose corn syrup, citric acid and red food colouring

If you want to use an alternative that doesn’t use corn syrup but won’t break the bank may I suggest heading over to Chowhound for their homemade grenadine syrup recipe or Spruce Eats. It’s actually surprisingly easy to make.

What can substitute grenadine with?

Torani’s pomegranate syrup or you could even use the juice from the maraschino cherry jar.

3. Pour over the grenadine.

4. Lightly stir.

5. Top with a cherry and lime slice and serve.

Top tips:

  • Swap out half the lemon and lime soda for ginger ale.

  • Add a lemon or orange slice for a different flavour.

  • To make an ombre grenadine layer tilt the glass slightly and pour the syrup down the side. Make sure to stir it before you drink though. You don’t want a mouth full of neat grenadine.

  • To make this a Dirty Shirley Temple, take away an ounce of Sprite and replace it with an ounce of vodka.
