DIY Rectangular Milk Carton Gift Boxes.
Looking for a cute way to package small gifts and treats? These DIY rectangular milk carton boxes are such a fun little paper craft and are surprisingly easy to make!
Unlike a traditional milk carton box, these rectangular gift boxes have a wider, flatter shape that makes them perfect for holding sweets, chocolates, small gifts and party favours.
You can make them from your favourite scrapbook paper and finish them with mini wooden pegs or baker's twine for a simple handmade touch.
The finished boxes measure approximately 5 x 2 x 4.5 inches, making them a great size for gifting. Big enough to fit two standard 37g bags of Maltesers inside.
What You’ll Need:
12 x 12-inch sheet of scrapbook paper
Paper trimmer or scissors
Double-sided tape or glue runner
Tip: A scoring board makes this project much easier, especially when you need to create several boxes.
How to make a Rectangle Milk Carton Gift Box.
1. Start with a sheet of scrapbook paper and trim it down to 12 x 9 inches.
2. Place the paper on your scoring board with the 12-inch side along the top.
3. Score at: ½ inch, 2 inches, 5 inches, 7 inches, 10 inches and 11½ inches.
These score lines will create the panels and tabs needed to assemble the box.
4. Rotate the paper 90 degrees so the 9-inch side is along the top.
5. Score at 2 inches and 7 inches.
6. Fold along all your score lines and use a bone folder to firmly crease each fold.
Taking a little extra time here will give you much neater, sharper folds and make the box easier to assemble.
7. Next, make two cuts along the 5-inch and 7-inch score lines, stopping when you reach the 2-inch horizontal score line.
8. Repeat on the opposite side as shown above.
These cuts create the square flaps that will form the sides of the box.
9. Apply double-sided tape or paper glue to the two square flaps you just created.
You'll also need adhesive on the two rectangular sections to the right, up to the ½-inch score line.
Take a look at the template photo above if you're unsure which sections need adhesive.
10. The 9-inch side forms the top of the box, while the 12-inch side forms the main body and sides.
11. Lay your paper flat. Lift one of the square flaps and stick it to the back of the rectangle piece that has the tape or glue on.
12. Lift the flap with no tape and stick it to the glued flap.
13. Do the same to the other side.
14. Once the box is assembled, gently squeeze the top edges together.
The score lines should naturally fold inwards, creating the triangular folds at either end and giving the box its milk carton shape.
15. To finish, secure the top with a couple of mini wooden pegs or tie it closed with baker's twine.
Then all that's left to do is fill your little box with treats or a small gift!
