Learn how to make your own Embossed Clay Star decorations.

My love affair with all things clay continues with these embossed clay stars. I can't get enough of this air drying clay. I used it to make these stamped clay magnets and again when I made these faceted clay tea lights. With christmas only a few weeks away clay tree decorations seemed like the best thing to make next.

Air drying clay, a rolling pin, stamps (I used these), cable knit wool or anything else you want to use to make an impression in the clay, a star shaped cookie cutter, sandpaper and some ribbon or string.

1. Start by rolling out your air hardening clay evenly to about 5mm thick.

2. Next take your cable knit wool and place it on top of the clay. Using the rolling pin press the wool firmly into the clay. Make sure to apply even pressure with the rolling pin. You can always peel back a corner first to make sure you're happy with the pattern before you remove the whole thing.

Remember you don't have to use wool to emboss your clay. You can use stamps or anything else that will leave an impression. I used these crystal stamps to decorate some of my stars and there's a wooden version as well if you prefer.

3. Using your chosen cookie cutter cut out your clay shapes.

4. Carefully peel away any excess clay and using a straw or in this case a pen lid punch holes in the top of each star. Make sure you don't make the hole too close to the edge of your shape. I lost a few stars this way. The clay needs to be thick enough not to snap when the ribbon is threaded through.

5. Leave to dry for 24/48 hours. Remember the thicker the clay the longer it takes to dry. If you find your clay stars curl up as they dry simply turn them over halfway through the drying process.

6. When dry sand away any rough edges.

7. Thread on some ribbon or bakers twine and hang.

I love these. I think they'd make great gift toppers as well as tree decorations and you could even make teeny tiny ones like in this pin and string them together to make a sweet star garland.
