How to choose the right paper for your DIY box.

For most gift boxes the sturdier the paper the better. If you're making a printable gift box I recommend using cardstock. Most printers can handle lightweight cardstock or scrapbook paper.

If your card is too thick to run through the printer you can print the box design out onto some lightweight cardstock first and use this as a template.

For small boxes that don't need to last other alternatives are origami paper or gift wrapping paper. But make sure to test them out first. The thinner paper does mean your box won't be as strong as if you'd used card.

A few tips for making simple DIY Gift Boxes.

  • The PDF templates are designed to fit standard A4 paper if you don’t want to mess around cutting 12x12 inch scrapbook paper to size keep an eye out for letter-sized cardstock.

You can find some over on Scrapbook.com.

  • To save time print and cut or fold them in advance. You can store them flat in a binder and fold them as needed. Ideal for any last-minute small gifts like jewellery and chocolates.

  • I like to use double-sided tape to stick my boxes together. It’s mess-free and there’s no waiting around for the glue to dry. Another good alternative is a tape roller or a glue stick. Runny glue like PVA or school glue can make your paper buckle and ruin your box.

Origami Gift Boxes

These origami boxes are easy and fun to make. No cutting or glueing is required. Not only do they make fantastic gift boxes but they’re also great for storing craft supplies.

Instead of making a bottom and a top for your easy origami box, why not take the bottom of the box and use it to store washi tape, paperclips, drawing pins and other little bits and pieces. Attach a handle and use them as DIY gift baskets or line them with parchment paper and use them to serve popcorn on movie nights.
