Toffee apples take my right back to childhood and heading down to the local park to watch the fireworks. They’re the perfect treat for standing in front of a bonfire on a dark, chilly evening. You can’t beat like the crunch of a buttery caramel toffee apple on a crisp autumn evening.

As Halloween and Bonfire Night are fast approaching I thought I’d share this easy toffee apple recipe. It’s so easy to make your own crunchy toffee apples. All you need is just four ingredients and you’re all set. You’ll never bother buying them again!

Top Tips.

  • If your toffee is soft and chewy it needs to get hotter. If it doesn’t set hard on the apples boil it for a little longer. When it’s dropped into cold water it should form a hard toffee and any small strands should shatter.

  • Make sure to boil your coffee in a good side pan. As it boils the toffee will bubble and froth up so you want to make sure your pan is large enough to accommodate this.

  • To clean the pan, first, remove any excess toffee. Next, boil the kettle and pour into the pan. Add some washing-up liquid and scrub with a scouring pad or washing-up brush. Replace the water and keep going until all the toffee is dissolved.

How long do toffee apples last and how do you store them?

Although homemade toffee apples are best eaten as soon as possible they can be stored in an airtight container for up to three days. Wrap each apple in cellophane or parchment or paper and store them in a cool, dry place. Not the fridge as the toffee absorbs the moisture from the air and the crunchy coating turns soft and sticky. Wrap them in cellophane, tie with a bow and hand them out as Halloween or Bonfire Night treats.

Why is the toffee coating not sticking to the apple?

The waxy coating on some apples can mean the toffee slides right off. If you’ve washed your apples and you’re still having this problem you try can dunking them in a pan of boiling water for thirty seconds or so to remove the waxy coating.

Ingredients

  • 6 Eating Apples
  • 450g Demerara Sugar
  • 50g Unsalted Butter (plus a little extra for greasing)
  • 2 tsp Cider Vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Clear Honey
  • 150ml Cold Water

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the apples. Push an ice lolly stick firmly into the top of each one. Grease a piece of parchment or greaseproof paper with some unsalted butter. Fill a bowl with cold water. Keep this ready to test the toffee.
  2. Heat the sugar, butter vinegar, honey and 150ml of cold water in a pan. Keep stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  3. Boil for 10 minutes or until a little of the mixture hardens immediately when dropped into a bowl of cold water. Keep testing until you’re happy with the toffee. Don't worry if it looks frothy, this is totally normal.
  4. Remove from the heat. Dip the apples into the toffee and coat. Take care as it’s very hot.
  5. Stand them on the greased parchment paper and leave to set and cool.
